PlayStation3 (PS3) Slim

Do you have a Sony PlayStation3  (any old or new Slim models) or Sony Vaio Computer, Korg DSD Recorder or Sony XA5400ES?

If so, you can now listen to this award-winning recording in its original HD stereo format as DSD. Many believe that DSD (developed by Sony and Philips) is the very best audio format for hiqh quality recordings. Listening to "The Window" as DSD is 100% equivalent to hearing the original studio master which was recorded in this exceptionally natural, vinyl-like format. But unlike LP's, DSD Disc quality lasts forever! Cutting edge stuff :)

DSD is the encoding format used on ultra HD quality SACD's. "The Window" is one of the few ("Crossing" is another) popular music SACD's recorded originally(not remixed/remastered) to DSD. So you are hearing the studio original with this issue.

How You Create the DSD Disc...

dsd-disc.gif

Once you have downloaded the single ISO file, use it to burn a DVD on a PC or Mac. You must use software (like Nero) to burn the DVD referencing the ISO image you downloaded. You can then play the DVD directly in the different ways described below. It should only take a few minutes to download the ISO file (137MB).

Important Notes: Make sure you use software (like Nero) to burn the DVD. Reference the ISO file and burn a DVD.  You cannot simply copy files downloaded to a DVD.

Choose the  "Disc At Once"
option (not "Multisession") when burning the DVD to be sure you finalize the DVD. Otherwise the player may not be able to read the disc.

How You Play the DSD Disc...

The new media is referred to as a DSD Disc which allows the DSD encoded audio to be properly written to a DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW as DSF data files, and played through a variety of players including the Sony PlayStation3, the Sony SCD-XA5400ES universal player, or Sony Vaio computers. In addition, the audio files (DSF files) may be imported into a portable Korg MR-1 digital recorder/player or other Korg models (MR-1000, 2000(S)). Future Sony SACD players like the XA5400ES are also expected to support DSD Discs.

Listener comments about the music here: "eclectic", "honest", "intimate", "imaginative", "poetic", "essential", "brilliant", "organic", "extraordinary", "think-y", "unusual", "excellent", "pleasure", "must-have", "beautiful", "quality", "inspired", "original", "great story"...To me it sounds more like a folk pretzle doing the hula!...But you can read about some of what makes me tick musically here:

...In memory of John Havard - Mr. Soul - 1949 - 2009

Welcome music adventurer: I have been online with my original independent acoustic music since 1995, surrounded and inspired by the talents and innovations of many many different artists, storytellers, and audio folks, lots of whom contributed graciously to the recordings and performances over the years. My sincere thanks to all of them as I would not be here in any shape at all without their kindness and magic. Special thanks for all my independent roots, encouragement, guidance and creativity from the likes of Calvin McElroy, Scott Beynon, John Caulfield, Iseult Jordan, Roger Powell, George Cattermole, Kevin Brennan, Gus Skinas, Dr. Dem, Charlie Natzke, John Nowland, Gary McArthur, Lisa Kelly, Reid Dennis, John Havard, Peter Tucker, Chris Kee, Ken Owen, David Phillips, Issa, Sally Van Meter, Matt Flinner, Eric Thorin, John Magnie, Marc Dalio, Ross Martin and the many supporting radio stations all over the blue planet. I've been described as "independent to a fault" which I take as a fierce compliment.

People listening to me or to me with my various bands over recent years (David Elias & The CasualTees, David Elias & XING, David Elias & Great Unknown) have written up comparisons to all of these different people and other bands: early Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Townes Van Zandt, Dan Hicks, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, Richard Dobson, Rex Foster, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, Guy Clark, Bill Morrissey, Iron & Wine, John Prine, The Band, Crosby-Stills-Nash, The Dead, Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Eric Andersen, Loreena McKennitt!...to mention a few and give you some idea of the variety.

If you like any of those kinds of music you might check out my CD's and downloads for sale at Amazon, and iTunes, or on CD Baby!. I've been called a songwriter's songwriter and that's about as good as it gets for me.

Stuart Robinson from High Fidelity Review seems to kindly sum up my fascination and efforts for hi-res (now called HD) recordings in 5.1 Surround Sound as well as my lifelong fascination and enjoyment of music, performance and songwriting:

"So to summarise, while it is true that the recording [of The Window] is ‘pure’ DSD and a superb example of the art, that aspect alone is not what makes it great – arguably, and depending on your allegiance, 192kHz PCM or vinyl could’ve achieved an equal or higher level of fidelity – the real stars of this disc are, in no particular order, the wholly-realistic multi-channel presentation, the superb, intimate performance by David Elias and his band, the production and the music. To suggest that the magic of the disc stems predominantly from the DSD recording and delivery chain is both unfair and possibly misguided, it would’ve been an outstanding work and wholly recommended regardless of format. ‘The Window’ is definitely one for your collection, even if all you have is a humble old Compact Disc player, the fact that it is also available in high-resolution is just the icing on an already scrumptious cake."

With Appreciation and much Aloha,

- DE

do you feel like a remnant
of something that's passed
do you find things are moving
just a little too fast
